Our Board

The diversity and experience of our Board Members gives our people the opportunity to be innovative and fast-acting while still having the ability to make considered and educated business decisions.

Our Board brings with it a broad range of experience from various sectors, from banking and financial services to infrastructure, health and aged care, manufacturing and packaging.

  • Jim Craig

    Jim Craig

    Executive Chairman

    Jim studied law and economics at Adelaide University, before completing a Masters of Law at University of Melbourne. He worked as a lawyer for Blake Dawson for 6 years in Melbourne with two years on secondment to a Tokyo based law firm.

    In 1994 Jim joined Macquarie Capital’s Melbourne corporate finance group to work on public mergers and acquisitions. After leading a number of major resource transactions in Australia, he was appointed Head of Resources (1999) for Macquarie’s corporate finance business.

    In 2001 he relocated to London to run the Resources business on a global basis, building teams in London, Toronto, Vancouver and South Africa.

    Whilst in London, Jim led Macquarie’s advisory business and then assumed responsibility for the Macquarie Capital Funds Group. In 2003 Jim was also appointed CEO of Macquarie’s European business and Head of Macquarie Capital in Europe. Under Jim’s leadership, the European business grew substantially in terms of headcount, revenues and profit.

    In 2009, Jim relocated to Melbourne as Chairman, Macquarie Capital Advisers Australia. Jim is a Non-Executive Director of the following organisations:

    Australian United Investment Company Ltd (ASX listed);

    TFS Corporation Limited (ASX listed);

    Murdoch Childrens Research Institute; and

    Trinity College, University of Melbourne.

    He is also a major shareholder and Non-Executive Director of Cell Care Australia Pty Ltd, Australia’s largest cord blood banking business.

    Jim was appointed to the River Capital Board in 2011.

  • Barry Carp

    Barry Carp

    Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer

    Barry established River Capital in 1996 in conjunction with the Castan family. Through his role as Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer, Barry has developed the business into one of Australia’s leading boutique investment managers. Today, through its activities, River Capital invests on behalf of a significant number of private family groups, individuals and self managed superannuation funds.

    Between 1988 and 1994 Barry worked with Corrs Chambers Westgarth in Melbourne and the Chicago law firm, Mayer Brown & Platt. During this time, Barry advised companies on legal issues pertaining to finance and merger and acquisition transactions.

    Between 1994 and 1996 Barry worked in the corporate finance division of Macquarie Bank where he continued to assist companies in the capital markets and merger and acquisition space.

    Barry holds an Economics and Law degree from Monash University.

    Together with his wife Suzi, Barry co-chair’s the River Capital Foundation, which each year allocates a proportion of the River Capital profits to organisations working to support people who fall through society’s cracks. The River Capital Foundation focuses on issues surrounding children, mental health and indigenous communities.

  • Jeffrey Mahemoff AO

    Jeffrey Mahemoff AO

    Non Executive Director

    Jeffrey Mahemoff is currently an Executive Director of Smorgon Consolidated Investments. He is also Chairman of the Centre for Community Child Health at the Royal Children’s Hospital, a Life Governor of Bialik College and a Governor of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Jeffrey has many years of experience in investment, administration and commercial roles. Jeffrey was appointed to the River Capital Board in 1996 and acted in the role of Chairman from the commencement of his appointment until mid 2011.

  • Roland Brown

    Roland Brown

    Non Executive Director

    Roland Brown has a wealth of financial and commercial experience across multiple industry segments. From 1990 to 1997 he was Chief  Financial Officer of the Smorgon Consolidated Industries Group of Companies. Prior to that he ran his own cosulting company from 1983 to 1990, and in the early 1980's he was Chief Financial Officer of Elders IXL Limited.

    Roland was appointed to the River Capital Board in March 2000. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from St Andrew University, Scotland.

  • David Vaux

    David Vaux

    Non Executive Director

    After an early career in law with Freehills, David spent several years in the investment banking and venture capital sectors with Macquarie Bank and Jamison Equity Limited.

    In October 1998, David was appointed Managing Director of DCA Group Limited, an ASX listed business with market capitalisation of $50 million. Under his leadership, DCA expanded into diagnostic imaging and residential aged care with its I-Med and Amity businesses becoming market leaders in Australasia.

    In December 2006, DCA was acquired by a consortium including CVC Private Equity and the senior management team led by David for approximately $2.7 billion.

    David is currently Chairman of several companies, including: radiation oncology and cardiology group, GenesisCare Pty Ltd; the Social Ventures Australia Capital Fund; and the LBW Trust, which supports the tertiary education of young adults in cricket playing countries such as Zimbabwe, South Africa, India and Pakistan.

    David and his wife Sarah Jane have recently established “ELF”, an Education and Learning Foundation supporting aspirational children and social entrepreneurs focused on youth issues.

  • Tony Robinson

    Tony Robinson

    Non Executive Director

    Tony has broad corporate, board and management experience and was most recently appointed Managing Director of ASX listed financial services provider Centrepoint Alliance.

    Tony has had many years experience in an array of industries and brings with him a wealth of knowledge of the financial services sector and the management of public and private companies.

    From 2001 to 2006, Tony headed up leading insurance broking and specialised underwriting network, OAMPS, growing it from 200 to more than 1,200 employees. After five years with the group, Western Australian conglomerate Wesfarmers acquired OAMPS to add it to its growing suite of insurance businesses.

    During his time as Executive Director and CEO of IOOF Holdings, Tony played a key role in facilitating a merger between IOOF and Australian Wealth Management Limited.

    Tony has held various executive roles and was joint Managing Director of Falkiners Stockbroking; Managing Director of Wealthpoint (now part of the St George Group); Chief Financial Officer of Link Telecommunications and General Manager, Corporate Services at Mayne Nickless.

    Tony is currently a Non-Executive Director of Bendigo Bank.

  • Suzi Carp

    Suzi Carp

    Suzi began her professional career in Chicago at Lincoln Park Zoological Society and it is there that she became passionate about her community work. She returned to Melbourne in the early 1990’s and commenced work in her family’s business Smorgon Consolidated Industries – a diversified global industrial business. This was a dream come true – always wanting to be the first woman family member to professionally enter the business.

    However in 1994 after the family’s announcement of the Smorgon groups divestment Suzi’s career changed course and she then established a family and investment office which she is still involved with.

    Today, Suzi remains closely involved in River Capital the business she co-founded with her husband Barry in 1996. She remains committed to community and philanthropic activities – with a passion and focus on youth and mental health. She currently is chair of Pilotlight Australia, is on the board of the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute and chairs its development board. She is a member of Social Ventures Australia’s Leadership Council. Suzi is the very proud mother of Alyssa, Jade and Harry.
