The River Capital Executive Team comprises highly-qualified, experienced professionals with diverse backgrounds in funds management, investment banking and corporate advisory, public company management and fixed interest. Our Executive Team is headed by Barry Carp.

Barry Carp
Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer
Barry established River Capital in 1996 in conjunction with the Castan family. Through his role as Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer, Barry has developed the business into one of Australia’s leading boutique investment managers. Today, through its activities, River Capital invests on behalf of a significant number of private family groups, individuals and self managed superannuation funds.
Between 1988 and 1994 Barry worked with Corrs Chambers Westgarth in Melbourne and the Chicago law firm, Mayer Brown & Platt. During this time, Barry advised companies on legal issues pertaining to finance and merger and acquisition transactions.
Between 1994 and 1996 Barry worked in the corporate finance division of Macquarie Bank where he continued to assist companies in the capital markets and merger and acquisitions space.
Barry holds an Economics and Law degree from Monash University.
Together with his wife Suzi, Barry co-chair’s the River Capital Foundation, which each year allocates a proportion of the River Capital profits to organisations working to support people who fall through society’s cracks. The foundation focuses on issues surrounding children, mental health and indigenous communities.

Paul Cowan
Executive Director & Chief Operating Officer
Paul joined River Capital in February 2004 after having previously been appointed to the Board in a non-executive role. In addition to his role as Chief Operating Officer, Paul has served as River Capital’s representative on a number of public company boards, including Brumby’s Bakeries Limited and Cash Converters International Limited.
Prior to joining River Capital, Paul served as Chief Executive Officer of Lowell Capital Limited, which he joined in 1988. There he maintained day-to-day responsibility for the company’s funds management and corporate advisory operations.
Having commenced his working career with Price Waterhouse in 1980, Paul has a Bachelor of Economics degree from Monash University and is a qualified Chartered Accountant.

James Davis
Executive Director & Portfolio Manager, River Capital Growth Fund
James joined River Capital in January 2003 after working for two years as a Senior Manager in the corporate finance department of one of Australia's largest independent stockbrokers, Tolhurst Noall Limited. During this time, James focused on equity capital markets and mergers, acquisitions and advisory transactions. Prior to this, he served as a member of KPMG’s assurance and advisory department and later as a manager with KPMG Corporate Finance where he specialised in mergers, acquisitions and advisory transactions.
James holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts from Monash University. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and a Fellow of FINSIA.

Josh Ackman
Portfolio Manager, River Capital Credit Fund
Josh joined River Capital’s Credit Investment Group in 2009. Prior to joining River Capital, Josh began his career at Deutsche Bank London in 1996 before moving to Goldman Sachs. He has also worked for New York based fund manager, Concordia, and Lehman Brothers/Nomura. Josh previously ran the Credit Default Swap business at Goldman Sachs in Tokyo and worked in various markets such as the UK, Japan and the United States before returning home to Australia in 2006.
Josh holds a Masters of Accounting & Finance from The London School of Economics and a Bachelor of Business degree from Monash University.
